Visual Storytelling

Composition (meaning “putting together”) is the arrangement of elements within a work of art. 

It’s a visual framework which helps to convey the underlying narrative in the work, and it forms the relationships between each element in the images that we create. 

You’ll find that good composition is fundamentally important for creating appealing images. 

It goes hand in hand with our compositing work – because while a technically successful composite integrates visual elements from separate sources into a single, seamless shot, a creatively successful composition arranges the elements in an aesthetically pleasing, interesting, and/or simply clear manner. 

While there is considerable creative and technical overlap between them, combining the two together is where the magic happens. It's how you can make compelling art and stories, and not just bland images. And that’s why you as a compositor should deeply understand composition. 

Using different techniques, you can guide the viewer’s eyes and attention through your images – focusing more on certain things while placing less emphasis on others – all while telling an engaging story and eliciting the right emotions along the way. 

Composition can dictate things like the balance, harmony, impact, hierarchy, visual flow, intent, and narrative in a shot. It’s a critical framework which you can use for communicating with the audience. 

In this huge guide – I should really call it a book: it’s 343 pages with over 500 example images(!) – we’ll do a deep dive into the principles and guidelines for composition, and how you can implement them in practice when compositing.
